Our mission is straightforward, to provide the protection you can trust. Maxiblock demystifies the complexity of sun protection with its compact range and provides the defence needed to safely enjoy the Australian sun.

How did you start your homegrown business?

Maxiblock is a Western Australian family business that my wife and I purchased in 2013. I have 25 years of experience in ingredients for cosmetic and pharmaceutical including UV filters, and using that expertise to upgrade what is being offered for the Australian public sounded logical and natural.

What inspires you?

The greatest sources of inspiration are the positive appreciations and support we receive about what we are doing. Sunscreens have a special importance in Australia due to the prevalence of skin cancer, and consumers are concerned and keen to support a genuine local brand.

What are the benefits of manufacturing locally?

Manufacturing in Australia has several important benefits: the lead time to manufacturing is minimised, and we have complete quality control over each process. It also means that counterfeiting is very unlikely. Also, by buying Australian Made products consumers help to sustain and grow our advanced manufacturing technologies. Australia’s economy has become less complex recently, relying heavily on a few key sectors to sustain economic activity. At Maxiblock, we are proud to help maintain and expand advanced manufacturing in Australia.

What makes the Australian consumer unique?

The Australian sun is among the harshest on earth and can burn unprotected skin in as little as a few minutes. Australian consumers are thus uniquely concerned by the skin damages induced by the Australian sun, and genuinely interested in cutting out the marketing spin and understand how sunscreens really work and the genuine differences in what is being offered.

What is the best business advice you have ever received?

Be confident and know where you want to go.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business? Business is always about cash and cash flow. Sunscreens are seasonal products which is compounding the issue. We are grateful of the support we received from our suppliers, customers, and a bank.

What has been your positive takeaway from the COVID-19 pandemic?

Be alert and creative, always.

What was your first job?

My first full-time job was about selling organo-silicone products to large businesses such as P&G, L’Oréal, Henkel, Chevron, Total… I also had several student jobs such as writing news articles for Le Figaro, selling products for Darty (the French equivalent to JB Hifi), or working as a trainee in Japan for Shiseido.

Do you keep your vegemite in the fridge or pantry?

Sorry, not a Vegemite consumer.
