Team Buy Aussie Now
This story was written by several Buy Aussie Now team members.
Genki Pet is for healthier, happier pets and their people. Their mission is to create calm and relaxation for pets and their people by utilising totally natural ingredients – including uniquely Australian Essential Oils.
Genki Pet products are unique because they work on your cat and dog AND you. Because we know our pets’ behaviour is often driven by our behaviour and vice versa. So they deal with both! This creates a lovely wholistic result and a very unique product. Their blends are formulated using the highest quality Human Grade Essential Oils, so it’s the best quality product for everyone to feel calm and relaxed. Formulated by a qualified Aromatherapist, using Kinesiology to determine the perfect ingredients and their perfect concentration. This along with 22+ years’ experience as a professional in the Natural Therapies industry is another unique feature about Genki Pet.
Each blend features an exciting signature Native Australian Essential Oil. While educating folks about the benefits of Aromatherapy for pets, and helping them discover the amazing Aussie Native Essential Oils in their own backyard. Currently, Genki Pet have three blends: Moving & Grooving: for calm travel, Friendship & Acceptance: for confident socialisation, Stillness & Calm: for deep relaxation and anxiety.
How did you start your homegrown business? “Genki” means “healthy, plus all sorts of other goodness” in Japanese. Japan is where I met the friend whose cats’ anti-social behaviour inspired the creation of my first Aromatherapy blend for confident and healthy socialisation; Friendship & Acceptance.
You see, since rehoming a third cat into her one-bedroom Sydney apartment, all three cats were hissing and fighting all over the place. It was a nightmare and the only solutions on the market at the time were from The US. My friend was buying American products and having to wait ages for them to arrive, after paying exchange rates, customs duties and international freight charges.
So when Friendship & Acceptance worked on stopping the hissing and fighting of the three cats and helped them find their own space in the apartment and relax into it, I knew we were onto something special!
What inspires you?
I am inspired by nature. Nature effortlessly provides perfect and healthy solutions with simplicity and beauty. I am particularly inspired by the power and beauty of newly emerging Native Australian Essential Oils and feature a signature Aussie oil in each of my blends.
As an Allied Health Practitioner of 22+ years experience, I have long advocated natural alternatives to man-made and chemical options. I am new to the pet industry, but from what I can already see, it is full of synthetic, chemical, poor quality and cheaply produced products and I believe animals deserve better than that.
These days, lots of folks (like me) don’t have chemical products in the kitchen, laundry or bathroom anymore, so why would they want to use chemical crap on their pets? I am proud my product gives them a totally natural option now. And one that’s free from nasty toxic synthetic “fragrances” – real deal Essential Oils are so much better for their noses and their health. I LOVE hearing the cool stories of my customers telling me about their dog or cat “self applying” my blends by rubbing themselves against the bed or play equipment that have just been spritzed with one of my blends!
Educating folks about a high quality and totally natural alternative in pet care is part of my what drives my work ethic. Aromatherapy for pets is cutting edge here in Australia – I want to be a leader in the field and introduce fur families to the simplicity and beauty of a natural product for calm, relaxation and positive behaviour change. I reckon we could all do with a good crop-dusting of Stillness & Calm! What do you reckon?
What are the benefits of manufacturing locally?
For me, it’s about quality control. I know exactly what goes into my locally produced product because I put it there!
What makes the Australian consumer unique? Because I do not have experience yet in selling to other consumers, I cannot say what makes Australian consumers unique.
I can say that I find Australian consumers willing to give a new idea a go, but in order to do this, they need to be able to connect somehow with the seller or the ideals of the seller’s business in some way. For example, I have customers who were early adopters of my new idea because “they believe in Aromatherapy and Natural Therapies”. And my product fits with their values and personal ethics.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business?
Because my products are a totally new concept for pet health and because they are wholistic in nature (i.e. using the same product on your dog/cat AND you!), creation of a totally new market has been my biggest challenge. Also being the first person in my family to think outside of the job box and have a go at running a business of my own has been quite isolating at times.
What has been your positive takeaway from the COVID-19 pandemic? Relationships really matter! It is the people and their businesses with which I have solid relationships that my little company is still doing business during the pandemic. And the question we have all been asking each other is: “How can I help you?” It’s been really nice.
What was your first job?
Sales assistant/customer service at The Oven D’or Bakery, Wynnum, Queensland. I did everything! I even learned some Baker skills as well, like icing cakes. My sister worked there after me too.
Do you keep your vegemite in the fridge or pantry?
Pantry – tomato sauce is in there too.
Favourite Australian film quote?
“Tell ‘em to get STUFFED!” – Donk, Crocodile Dundee.
Which classic Aussie song would you perform at karaoke? “Throw your arms around me” – Hunters & Collectors.
