Our inspiration is Australian Made. We are so passionate about producing natural sustainable products that stand the test of time and keeping jobs in Australia.
A regional business producing Australian hardwood chopping boards, The Cutting Board Company specialise in large custom-made boards and branded corporate gift boards. Their timber is sustainably sourced here in Australia and the whole manufacturing process is operated on solar power. With natural, beautiful and one hundred per cent Australian made products, we needed to learn more about the brand so we chatted with Natalie Langley, who runs the business with her husband Ken.
How did you start your homegrown business?
My husband, Ken Langley has been in the timber industry in Northern NSW for over 25 years. Ken and I started The Cutting Board Company around the time of the GFC. The industry stopped, no one was spending on building or renovating, and Ken came up with the idea to utilise timber offcuts at the mill and produce into quality chopping boards. He originally made these from home in the back shed and sold the boards at local markets. Then gradually moved into a full factory which we have since expanded. We now ship Australia Wide and overseas.
What inspires you?
This is easy. Our inspiration is Australian Made. We are so passionate about producing natural sustainable products that stand the test of time and keeping jobs in Australia, especially regional Australia.
What are the benefits of manufacturing locally?
Benefits are endless. The first thing that comes to mind is keeping local jobs local and keeping profits in Australia. But also knowing where the timber has come from and the process is also especially important. In Australia we have to adhere to strict environmental government guidelines, so sustainability is a major factor in choosing locally made products
What makes the Australian consumer unique?
Australians care about the environment, they care about quality and they care about supporting each other. They also appreciate good customer service!
What is the best business advice you have ever received?
Treat your customers like your family. Business is nothing without customers!
What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business?
Economic downtowns resulting in loss of consumer confidence. This gave us the opportunity of thinking outside the square and working out how to improvise in hard times.
What has been your positive takeaway from the COVID-19 pandemic?
I think we have to look for silver linings everywhere. This time is an opportunity to reflect and see what is important in our own lives. Our health and happiness comes first.
Do you keep your vegemite in the fridge or pantry?
Haha! Definitely the fridge.
Which classic Aussie song would you perform at karaoke?
I can’t sing, but if I could it would be “Last Train Out of Sydney” Cold Chisel (No idea why, it was just the first song that popped into my mind!)
