Meet the Maker: Kat Bergin, Founder, Director & Owner Of nkdscent
Team Buy Aussie Now
This story was written by several Buy Aussie Now team members.
nkdscent is a beauty and grooming brand that unifies the most stunning scents and luxurious ingredients with sustainable solutions.
The current range comprises of travel-friendly solid colognes and perfumes in a slide tin case that literally can go anywhere and everywhere with you. All ingredients are sustainably sourced and selected exclusively for their impressive benefits and attributes, all packaging is 100% recyclable or compostable and the brand actively supports environmental organisations, both locally and globally.
How did you start your homegrown business?
I’ve always been obsessed with solid perfumes and carry them around in my handbag, backpack and car, but I’ve always longed for them to smell more like designer perfumes. I’m also known for my keen nose, so creating different fragrances has been a fun experience that was always going to happen. I found that making products is a creative experience that I deeply enjoy. The business structure didn’t occur until around February this year when I decided I needed to do something I really enjoy that would work alongside my studies and family life.
I’m halfway through an environmental science degree, majoring in environmental quality and earth science, I work casually as a disability support worker, volunteer fortnightly for a marine wildlife rescue and research company and have two children in primary school. My dream is to grow nkdscent to support my family, provide stable, enjoyable employment for those who become involved and to move the world towards ethical and sustainable options.
What inspires you?
nkdscent designs are inspired by clean, simple, straight-forward imagery. I love the clean-cut look and black is so classy. The company is inspired to generate awareness of sustainable practices and making conscience decisions. I’m inspired to create a brand that is responsible and makes sustainability the in-thing.
What are the benefits of manufacturing locally?
As it’s all me running the show, I get to experiment with different ingredients and sample all the trials. I am in full control of the manufacturing and aspire for the highest quality products.
What makes the Australian consumer unique?
Australian consumers are light-hearted and amazing gift givers. They care about where products come from and are increasingly becoming aware of sustainable choices and their environmental impacts.
What is the best business advice you have ever received?
“You can’t do things on your own.” Stefan James. There’s been so much I’ve learnt along the way, but still so much I just can’t know by myself. I’ve listened to handfuls of podcasts and influencers on YouTube, but I’ll always be learning and always be needing help or advice.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business?
The outlays for the ingredients and packaging has been all out-of-pocket and this meant I could only start off with the release of 2 fragrances. I already have many more incredible scents that I would love to share. Once nkdscent gets momentum, a huge range of scents will be released and some amazing hair and face products will become the next focus.
What has been your positive takeaway from the COVID-19 pandemic?
We made the most out of family time at home by having regular study breaks together and making time for creative activities. It’s helped me to realise that when things are getting difficult or you’re feeling stuck in an activity, just take a little creative break. I’ve enjoyed mindful drawing, painting landscapes, face-painting, puzzles, UNO card games, learning to play guitar, learning another language, cooking, and I’m sure there’s many more.
What was your first job?
Counter service at McDonalds. The most enjoyable shifts were during the footy games. We had so many orders it was impossible to keep up, but we made it fun.
Do you keep your vegemite in the fridge or pantry?
Definitely in the pantry so it spreads easily on my fancy, soft sourdough bread.
Favourite Australian film quote?
“Aborigines don’t own the land. They belong to it. It’s like their mother. See those rocks? Been standing there for 600 million years. Still, be there when you and I are gone. So arguing over who owns them is like two fleas arguing over who owns the dog they live on.” – Crocodile Dundee
Which classic Aussie song would you perform at karaoke?
Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
