The Boho Pet was born to adorn your pet. Dogs have become so much more than just companion animals; they are now a part of the family.

Hence, it’s becoming more and more common and even popular now to accessorise and style your dog in the latest fashions for any special outing or occasion. The Boho Pet caters to this by providing fellow animal lovers, like myself, functional products which set a benchmark for style.

How did you start your homegrown business?

The Boho Pet is actually my second business and is still in its early stages having only officially launched late in 2019. I’ve been a professional photographer for many years and found my calling when I started specifically photographing pets 10 years ago (having now won numerous awards for my pet photography), so I’ve spent a lot of time working within the pet and creative industries. I’m a very visual based creative person, and with a desire to use my hands in a creative craft, I wanted to further delve into my creative side. That meant being able to make something more tactile and create a product that is 100% crafted from my own original ideas and style and be able to incorporate this with my love of dogs. It didn’t take long until I established how I could create items for pets made from macramé techniques and this is what set The Boho Pet in motion.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by nature, colour, imagery, materials and threads I find, dogs and of course always by my own dog. She is the ultimate little boho princess! I am passionate about the idea of being able to have and create something which is hand made. Not mass manufactured using factories or cheap resources or labour. Being able to offer something that is new, different, original and offers a sense of individuality in style which people can appreciate for their pets, is inspiring to me.

What makes the Australian consumer unique?

When it comes to the pet industry, pets are very much a part of the Australian way of life. Having one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, I think it’s clear that many Australians consider their pet to be a part of their family and only want the best for their pet.

What is the best business advice you have ever received?

“Kill them with kindness (because you can’t kill them)” LOL. This is really just a bit of fun, but it always sticks in my head and I’ve found it is the best way to resolve any situation to ensure a positive outcome.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business?

Being a sole business trader the biggest challenge I find is myself. Questioning myself and having confidence in what I am doing, trying not to always compare myself to others and let negativity creep in.

What has been your positive takeaway from the COVID-19 pandemic?

While being in lockdown has taken its toll on many businesses, mine included, I can appreciate that it’s given me the opportunity to really concentrate on this business without distractions. It’s given me the time to focus on getting my product line established, build relationships and grow my following and audience. Being on stay at home restrictions means there’s plenty of time to macramé!

Which classic Aussie song would you perform at karaoke?

I do like to loudly sing along to ‘Pineapple Head’ by the classic Aussie/NZ band (controversial lol) Crowded House.
