Meet the Maker: Amy Skinner Founder & Jeweller of AMBRY
Team Buy Aussie Now
This story was written by several Buy Aussie Now team members.
AMBRY was born out of a desire to create jewellery that brings empowerment and confidence. The slipping on of an AMBRY adornment should inspire creativity and make a statement like no other. AMBRY is about being bold, strong and feeling unstoppable.
AMBRY has changed Amy's belief system and her growth, her own personal journey is in every unique piece of jewellery she makes. And you will feel it, when you wear AMBRY you become AMBRY.
How did you start your homegrown business? From my studio in my apartment in Camperdown! Initially selling jewellery to friends and friends of friends as I refined my aesthetic and brand.
What inspires you? The process I take of creating my work is what really inspires me. The journey of creation and design/product development is the inspiration in itself. That might sound odd, however because I use wax to build my pieces, it’s so flexible with an infinite number of variants and opportunities to explore designs. I find that the designs build themselves.
Because of this, there is nothing quite like it on the market, it is unique to AMBRY. The designs I make are inspired by Aussie landscapes, rock formations, caves and stones. I bring all elements of the natural world into my work which gives the jewellery an earthy and grounded feel.
What are the benefits of manufacturing locally? I know my product, I know who’s made it, I know where my materials derive from and I can unequivocally vouch for its quality. My jewellery is made within NSW from start to finish and I have trusted relationships with my suppliers.
What makes the Australian consumer unique? Aussie customers know what they want. They value good quality, high end products. They seek unique jewellery that can make them stand out, that’s bespoke and not mainstream.
What is the best business advice you have ever received? Be patient, this is a marathon not a sprint. There’s only one way to eat an elephant and that's one bite at a time. In essence, keep chipping away, never stand still.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business? Developing a product that met my design ideals whilst also hitting the mark for what my customer wanted. It’s easy for me to get carried away - go too avant garde. I must always consider - who would wear this? Whilst keeping the essence of the AMBRY brand alive in every piece.
What has been your positive take away from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Community. We’re in this together. We must work together, support each other and share the love we have to ensure we all get through this.
What was your first job? Working in stables mucking out horses every saturday so I had enough money to go to the cinema/shopping (when I was 13).
Do you keep your vegemite in the fridge or pantry?
Who keeps it in the fridge?! Deffo the pantry for me
Favourite Australian film quote? “Please, tell me you're not one of Toulouse's oh so talented, charmingly bohemian, tragically impoverished writers.” Satine, Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge
Which classic Aussie song would you perform at karaoke?
ACDC Highway to Hell - oh yeah!
