Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business?
My name is Helen and I am the founder, creative director, designer and creator (plus a zillion other titles) at Pili Pala. I design and make a range of unique products that must fit only one crucial criteria; they must evoke joy! Our products include jewelelry, homewares, gifts and leather accessories and whilst that sounds like a lovely combination of colours, patterns and designs that compliment each other in the happiest of ways.
How did you start your homegrown business?
Pili Pala started as a hobby when I was a Speech Pathologist back in 2009. I needed a creative outlet to satisfy my artistic side. It took off and within 9 months I'd quit Speech Pathology to take on the business full time and I haven't looked back. I LOVE what I get to do every day, and the beautiful melding of (if sometimes overwhelming) running a business and being creative is so fulfilling and exhilarating.
What's the best thing about being a Mum?
Watching and learning about each child's fascinating and incredibly unique personality as it develops and evolves. (I would say this is equally overwhelming too - LOL).
What have been the biggest challenges for you as both a mum and a business owner? How do you balance the two?
The juggling of time between parenting and business. We don't have family nearby who has been able to help with looking after the kids so I never feel like we have the formula of family/business right; it's a constant juggle.
What advice do you have for other mums who want to start their own business?
Just start. Don't think you have to have everything worked out before you start, just get going and things will fall into place and evolve and change and you'll work out what you need to as you go. And you'll make mistakes and completely change course and thats part of the beauty of running a business.
Are your kids old enough to understand that their mum runs a business? Are there ways you involve them?
Yes, it's pretty much all they've ever known. Both kids have spent far too much time in my studio and help out with smaller tasks when theres big events or releases coming up. They can help with small tasks like peeling protective layers off some materials, sanding and and packaging.
