How did you start your homegrown business?
I always wanted to be a fashion designer and designed my first piece at 11 years old. But my catalyst aka blessing was whilst working for a large department store and having a boss who was less then inspiring. She was the reason I left a secure job to follow my dream and start my label back in 2006! I have always manufactured in Australia, right form the start even when many people told me to go offshore. I started small with a stall at Paddington markets and grew organically from there.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by my customers. When I get notes of thanks from women saying how much they love the pieces. I love seeing a woman try an item on and she looks in the mirror and stands a bit taller and smiles. So many women place huge amounts of pressure and criticism on their bodies so when I help a women feel great in their skin, there is nothing better. 14 years on I am still so grateful every time someone buys from me.
What are the benefits of manufacturing locally?
There are so many benefits:
- Convenience- I love that I can visit my production house any time I want.
- Quality- Its much easier to monitor and fix any issues quickly.
Time- I can design, sample and produce all within weeks.
Low Carbon footprint- As everything is made locally there are no air travel involved. Sustainable delivery- Because nothing is sent from overseas- there is not need for plastics or unnecessary packaging .
Helps our economy- It keeps the talent, skills and $$ in Australia.
What makes the Australian consumer unique?
Australians can be loyal to made in Australia. Many enjoy a relaxed style which works well for my fashion label.
What is the best business advice you have ever received?
Focus on income producing activities - Its so easy to get caught up with social media, blog posts , photography etc but what are the activities in your business that produce income?
What are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in business?
How long do we have?? There have been so many challenges from manufactures letting me down, fabric no longer being stocked, moving states and keeping the business going. But my biggest challenge at the moment is taking on a certain popstar for breaching my trademark. Its daunting and I have moments of thinking it would be easier not to BUT doing the right thing doesn’t always mean doing the easy thing.
So many small business get taken advantage of from overseas conglomerates so I am taking on this battle not just for me but for all small business. Its very much a David and Goliath case.
What has been your positive takeaway from the COVID-19 pandemic?
The support and acknowledgement about how important Made in Australia is- Like Buy Aussie now is doing. I have been manufacturing here since 2007 and its always been a topic close to my heart.
What was your first job?
My first “job” was helping my mums friend in her beauty salon. I would fold towels, clean, and give hand massages to clients. I was only about 13 and think it was a way to get me out of the house -My mum was a working single parent.
